History

The Trippenhuis has been the seat of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) since 1912. The Trippenhuis was built between 1660 and 1662 as a residence for the brothers Louys and Hendrick Trip, traders in copper, iron, and weapons. At their request, Justus Vingboons designed a civic palace with two houses behind a shared facade, where the brothers and their families lived and had their offices. From the early 19th century, it served as the headquarters of the Academy of Sciences. The Trippenhuis was also the first home of the Rijksmuseum, where The Night Watch and other famous works were on display. When the Rijksmuseum left, the Academy remained and expanded over the years to include the surrounding canal houses. Together, they form the Trippenhuis complex. After extensive renovation, these buildings, each with its own character, form the heart of science and art.

The Tinbergen Hall is named after the Academy members, Nobel Prize winners and brothers Jan and Niko Tinbergen. It is the largest hall in the Trippenhuis complex and, after a major renovation, has been fully operational again since the end of 2019. The Tinbergen brothers, both won a Nobel Prize: Jan (an economist) received the first Nobel Prize in Economics in 1969 for his work in econometrics, while Niko (a biologist) won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1973 for his research on animal behavior (ethology). They are a rare example of two brothers receiving such a prestigious award in different scientific disciplines.
